The Scofflaws were the first band I ever saw live. I was 14-years-old, and in an instant, I fell in love with a thriving Long Island music scene, ska music in general, and The Scofflaws specifically. I bought a “Record of Convictions” CD on the spot, and it’s still in heavy rotation 23 years later. “I Can’t Decide” was a standout favorite; it first came to light, I believe, as a single that Buford O’Sullivan (who wrote the tune) released on Moon Records under his own name in ‘96. Both versions are tremendous, and as a trombonist, Buford has been an inspiration to me since that fateful day in 1998 when I first saw The Scofflaws.

I recently finished recording demos for a ska-heavy full length album. Here’s one of those demos, albeit elevated by Jimmy “Nord Dog” Doyle’s real (and tiny) drums and new (used) Nord organ. I played guitar and horns, sang, and programmed MIDI bass/percush. I also started the cover art, but Nord Dog did most of the heavy lifting there. I rewrote most of the lyrics to reflect today’s IPAphilic craft beer culture. Maybe we’ll play it for you at your (my) local brewery!

Many thanks to Nord Dog Doyle for his continued artistic efforts; to Mon Palinowski and John DeDominici (name deliberately misspelled) for trying to explain recording/technical concepts to me in very simple ways; to Neil Callaghan (who played melodica for The Rocky Sullivans at least once) for giving me some artisanal beer terminology courtesy of his charming Cigar City Brewery videos; to Buford O’Sullivan for writing the original, wonderful song, and for continuing to create incredible music (the man is King Midas with a trombone); and to The Scofflaws for setting an incredibly high, unmet bar for Long Island ska.
