SONGWRITING:

“TELL ME MA” is an Irish folk song/children’s game from the 1800s. The Dubliners probably did my favorite version on their 1964 album.

“MERRILY KISSED THE QUAKER” is a traditional Irish song. In my opinion, Planxty put out the best possible version of this song on their 1972 album. Before I perish, I wish to record a version of every song on that album. Thus far, I’m at 1.5 out of 12.

“STREAMS OF WHISKEY” was written by Shane MacGowan, for The Pogues’ 1984 album. I originally started working on “THE BLACKSMITH”, another traditional Irish song perfected by Planxty, but I didn’t think I could get it together in time. So I went with this classic Pogues gutter hymn, which means the world to me.

“GRACE” was written in 1985 by Seán and Frank O’Meara. It’s written from the perspective of Joseph Plunkett, a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising, who married his childhood sweetheart, Grace Gifford, hours before his execution. Rod Stewart claims that BBC banned him from singing the song because of its “Irish, anti-English overtones," btw.

TYSMs:

Tremendous thanks are offered toward the stalwart musicians who recorded on these four timeless classics — John, James, Dr. Music — as well as stalwart musician/engineer Mon Palinowski, for doing what he does best and bringing these tracks to life. I’m also super appreciative of my wife (Borat voice) and my kids (regular voice) for supporting me throughout the recording process (and for getting me one of the mandolins I played). And I’m really glad that Shane MacGowan, Seán O’Meara, Frank O’Meara, and Traditional wrote these songs. Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Wear your mask and get your shots, and then maybe we can have a record release party. And do other things, too!

Rocky Sullivan, Psy.D. Oceanside, New York

With a head full of limericks and a belly full of potatoes, Mick Babe conscripted members of Bomb the Music Industry! and The Fad into The Rocky Sullivans, and they played Hibernian music stupidly fast and unnecessarily loud. Rocky Sullivan, Psy.D. is the band’s readeption. ... more
