about

This is an old American song that first popped up in 1909 by a teacher-man named John Lomax. Lotta other folks have played it since (most notably, as far as I’m concerned, Dave Van Ronk), but this version, admittedly, is closely aligned with the Marcus Mumford/Oscar Isaac version from the 2013 film “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Have you seen that film? A self-destructive musician going through the motions after the death of his best friend and bandmate (Here’s lookin’ at you, Zach Insler [1984 — 2006]). That movie gutted me, man. Strong 2007/Rocky Sullivans vibes for me. “The Auld Triangle” even pops up on the soundtrack, which was a staple of our set. And since Joel and Ethan Cohen felt no need to reach out and ask for permission to include that song in their film, I figured it was okay for us, in turn, to cover the song that was a staple of their bleak, beautiful film.
